Proper breathing techniques are important for helping to decrease pain. When there is pain, the body tenses and the brain perceives a stress response. Through breath modulation, nervous system and muscle relaxation can occur allowing for increased blood flow and clearing of waste products in muscle. With appropriate breathing techniques, the stress response in the brain is signaled to slow down again , allowing muscle relaxation and decreased pain.
Proper breathing techniques are also important when we exercise in order to recruit muscle groups that work together to active the core for spinal and pelvic stability.
